If my math is correct today is day 16 (May 22) of a 39 day trip (59% remaining) and Carol and I have been separated exactly .04% of the time (counting bathroom breaks). That is partly because we love each other and partly because we trip and fall a lot and we’re always hanging on to the other one.
We are cheek and jowl, 2 times cheek to cheek (our record is 3 but that was in a calendar year that went from July to July, over a period of 3 years) and that can bring stresses of over-familiarity, differences in day to day expectations, and general sweatiness.
Yesterday marked the 9th time that she was not speaking to me in the past week (our record is 62 but that was in a calendar year of 10 days on our Utah trip). I think I’m easy to get along with, just ask me. I also went the extra mile in Carcassonne and got a European haircut (I told the woman in marginal French ‘Brad Pitt-style’ and she misheard it as ‘look like s××t-style) but it will grow back by summer. But what has Carol done to make herself enticing to me? Yes, she has clean stylish clothes (stylish for Castlegar) and her breath is sweet and she showers, and uses deodorant; but I want the full package.
Despite our difficulties we are having a blast and we complement each other’s weaknesses. She does the navigating and organizes the laundry and meal choices in the rooms, and I am the schlep with the backpack and occasional chauffeur… perfect harmony.
Anyways big day coming up, but that will be the next post.
